Jon Nicholson Morris, a former professional football player who spent 15 seasons in the NFL and earned a place in the New England Patriots Hall of Fame, died on October 15, 2026, at Golden View Health Center in Meredith, New Hampshire. He was 84.

Morris died following a long battle with dementia, leaving behind his wife, Gail, their children and grandchildren, siblings, extended family, and many others who remember his remarkable career and lasting love for football.

Born on April 5, 1942, in Washington, D.C., to John and Leonie Morris, Jon developed into an exceptional athlete whose talent eventually carried him from college football to the professional ranks. He attended Gonzaga College High School, graduating in 1960, before continuing his education at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he graduated in 1964.

At Holy Cross, Morris established himself as a standout center and linebacker for the Crusaders. His performances earned him recognition among the school’s notable athletes, and he was inducted into the Holy Cross Hall of Fame in 1973. He later received another significant honour when he was named to the Holy Cross Ring of Honor in 2010.

Morris entered professional football after being drafted in 1964. He chose the Boston Patriots over the Green Bay Packers, beginning a career that would span 15 seasons and establish him as an important figure in the franchise’s history.

He spent 11 seasons with the Patriots from 1964 to 1974, followed by three seasons with the Detroit Lions and a final season with the Chicago Bears. Throughout his career, Morris earned six AFL All-Star selections and was named a Pro Bowler, reflecting his consistency and ability at the highest level of the game.

One of the proudest moments of his football journey came in 2011, when he was inducted into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame. The honour recognized his contributions to the team and the legacy he built during his years in New England.

Football remained a defining part of Morris’s life even after he stepped away from the field. He continued his involvement with the sport as a radio broadcaster for the Patriots and also had a brief television career, allowing him to remain connected to the game and its supporters.

After retiring from professional football, Morris pursued a career in business. He established Jon Morris & Co., a successful food brokerage company that carried his name. His transition from the NFL into business marked another chapter in a life shaped by determination, professional commitment, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities.

Away from his career, Morris shared a long marriage with Gail. The couple married on December 28, 1968, in Boston, Massachusetts, and spent their later years enjoying retirement in the golf communities of Bluffton, South Carolina, and St. Simons Island, Georgia. In 2024, they relocated to New Hampshire to be closer to family.

Morris is survived by Gail; his son, Jack, and daughter-in-law, Kristi, and their children, Jake and Cole; and his daughter, Jennifer, and son-in-law, Mark, and their children, Faye and Nash.

He is also survived by his eight siblings: Cecy Durkin and her husband, Bill; Ned and his wife, Jane; Will and his wife, Gina; Joe and his wife, Ann; Rob and his wife, Patty; Lee; Anne; and Meg and her husband, Samad. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who were part of his extended family.

The family will hold private services at a time and place of its choosing. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism in honour of Morris’s grandson, Cole, who is on the autism spectrum. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire in Boscawen is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jon Morris will be remembered for his achievements on the football field, his contributions to the Patriots organization, and the professional path he built after retirement. Beyond the honours and statistics, his life also included decades of family devotion, business accomplishments, and a lasting connection to the sport he loved.
